the necklace movie trailer

our animation class took preexisting footage and spliced it into our own film trailers. id like to dub some things into the sound track to make it really realistic but theres something creepily nice about having just music...

animation

moodboard for a video project im starting on in animation class! something im very excited to be working on with my cousin hayden—whos an avid outdoor extreme sport enthusiast, hilarious amatuer comedian, stylish high school stud-man, and in my opinion just a general kick-ass guy. the idea is a short preview teaser for a mock-documentary about hayden (a supposed professional extreme skiier/boarder) and his buddies on a wild tour of the western mountain world... more to come on this...

this american life...

so when im doing homework i usually just listen to repeat podcasts of This American Life, one my favorite talk radio shows on NPR (thats National Public Radio to those of you who ipod it all day)... if you've never given it a listen you really should, theyre funny, entertaining and you really cant get bored because each one is so different.
anyway... as i was listening to one last night, at about 2 in the morning—so you can guess what sort of mental hiatus i was in, a thought came to me about the portrayal of information. it
occurred to me that on the radio statistical information has to be given interest, relevance, and impact using purely sound. upon considering this, i realized what an asset we have been given in allowing our graphic solutions to be coupled with and accented by an accompanying audio track... not only can we appeal to an audience visually we can connect and reaffirm the point of our statics with something as individually emotional and influential as the potent sensation of sound.
now i just have to take the little thought and turn it into a aftereffects project.... much harder than just theorizing....

where would we be without the these fellas??

NIGEL HOLMES

A British theorist and designer, Holmes is the principal of New York based design firm Explanation Graphics. He began his career with Time magazine creating what was know as
"explanation graphics" but as his expertise on the matter grew he began sharing his thoughts on the systematic representation of statistics eventually writing six books on information design.

SAUL WURMAN

A true father of information design, Wurman initiated his illustrious career by becoming a well-known name in both the architecture and graphic design fields. His accomplishments are innumerable but he has published over 80 titles and is most famous for his creation and chairmanship of the renowned TED conference. TED still holds a promenent place in the design wo
rld as a forum for design discussion and as a thinktank for innovative discourse in the theory and practice of visual communications.

EDWARD TUFTE

Born a native to Kansas City, MO, Tufte is well known for his learned theories on the implication of information graphics and for his continued involvement in passing along the rules of such theory to the designers of tomorrow. After receiving extensive schooling from several illustrious universities Tufte developed his expertise in the areas of information design, interface design, statistics and political economy, all subjects he would eventually teach after becoming a professor at one of his alma mater, Yale.

All three, although their stylistic personalities and the implication of their skills differs, have contributed greatly to the vast leaps that imformation graphics has made in recent years. Their exploration of technique and careful study of how people react to visual data coupled with a diligent outsourcing of ideas helped to initiate the explosion of good explanation design being created today.

plastic bags

my dad sent this site to me this morning about the hazardous effects of our word-wide consumption of plastic bags and their detrimental effects globally. It got me thinking about how we could depict the data provided by the slide show that would make this already horrifying collection of statistics even more compelling. just something to think about... check it out @
